Case Study: Officer Involved Shooting (OIS)[1]

In a recent event, law enforcement officers from a Rocky Mountain area agency observed a suspect, wanted in connection with an attempted homicide, exit a vehicle and enter a convenience store. The officers entered and confronted the suspect, who failed to respond to orders to submit. The situation escalated and officers fatally shot the suspect.

Two of the officers carried pistols equipped with the ShotDot® device. Due to being members of a special unit, the officers were not equipped with body cameras. The ShotDot® device is designed to provide reliable, accurate data allowing investigators to gain a clearer picture of what happened. In this incident, the ShotDot® device allowed investigators to accurately verify which of the officers on scene fired their pistols, how many rounds each of those officers fired, and the order in which the rounds were fired. As ShotDot® devices become more widely fielded by law enforcement agencies, the value of the data gained will dramatically enhance investigation of OIS incidents.
