Ogden Police Department Adopts ShotDot Technology for Improved Firearm Tracking

The Ogden Police Department is implementing an innovative technology, ShotDot, to enhance the accuracy and reliability of tracking firearm usage by its officers.
The following is a clip from ABC4:
ShotDot, a cutting-edge device, was designed to accurately count shots fired from a gun while distinguishing them from other forces, such as accidental weapon drops that may occur in the line of duty. Ogden Police Chief Eric Young showcased the new ShotDot devices as the department eagerly adopts this groundbreaking technology.
“This is just another verification of exactly what’s taking place that has no bias,” Young said. “It’s a machine.”
Unbiased and reliable, ShotDot is a small device resembling a USB drive that attaches to the butt of each officer's Glock as a permanent fixture. It can only be removed using a magnetic device in the possession of supervisors. According to Chief Young, the device is unobtrusive and does not interfere with the gun's use.
Andrew Wood, a retired colonel and Chief Operating Officer for ShotDot, explained that the device is equipped with accelerometers and precisely calibrated clocks to record every round fired from the firearm. This data will streamline the process of gathering information and reconstructing events during investigations.
Chief Young emphasized the value of ShotDot's accurate data collection, as it alleviates the tedious process of collecting officer's firearms, counting ammunition, picking up shell casings, and conducting interviews to piece together the sequence of events. The device will provide a quick and accurate overview for investigators, ultimately improving public safety and accountability.
By implementing ShotDot technology, the Ogden Police Department demonstrates its commitment to transparency and responsible firearm usage, ensuring the public's trust and confidence in law enforcement.
